Notifications unreliable — messages marked read before I see them

Slack notifications are inconsistently marking messages as read before I actually view them. This happens across devices — mobile notification arrives, I don't tap it, but when I open desktop Slack the message is already marked as read. Critical messages are being missed because of this.
